I have no idea how that happened, nor whether it affected its actual performance (probably) but it doesn't explain why it went dead only at the last moment, and why the other two drives read "0MB" 🙂

very interesting, i have only seen that happen when a the board was touching something and it shorted out and melted where it was touching
This was locked in a sealed drive enclosure, centered so nothing was touching anything :-/

I've only seen that when a box had a power supply fail with +50V on a +5v rail.
what kind of humidity are we looking at?
Moisture builds bridges, or some such thing.
65 degree climate controlled. No humidity sensors, but you don't go in there without a bottle of water.
